Openserve Web Stream & Web Connect: Understanding Integrated ONT Solutions
Unlike traditional fibre lines, Openserve Web Stream (new) and Web Connect packages feature WiFi-integrated ONT devices, meaning we don't supply a separate router.
🔌 WiFi-Integrated ONT
One device that acts as both the fibre ONT and the WiFi router
Pros:
- All-in-one simplicity: Fewer devices, fewer cables, and less clutter.
- Lower installation cost: No need to buy or power a separate router.
- Easier troubleshooting: One device = one point of failure to diagnose.
- Faster installation: Quicker to deploy, especially for entry-level FTTH packages.
Cons:
- Limited WiFi performance: Typically has weaker antennas, limited range, and fewer features than a quality router.
- Basic features: Often lacks advanced configuration options like port forwarding, VPN, QoS, etc.
- Difficult to upgrade: If the WiFi becomes insufficient, you'll have to disable the built-in WiFi and add a second router anyway.
- Vendor lock-in: You're often stuck with the ISP's chosen hardware.
📶 Standalone ISP-Supplied WiFi Router
ONT handles fibre termination, and a separate router handles WiFi & networking
Pros:
- Better WiFi performance: Dedicated routers generally have stronger coverage and performance (especially mesh-ready ones).
